Semmelweis University is the oldest medical university in Hungary. Its history started nearly 250 years ago in 1796, when Queen Maria Theresa added a medical faculty to the University of Nagyszombat. Today, Semmelweis University with its six faculties and health care specialization occupies a distinguished place in the Hungarian higher education system. Built on the trinity of education, research and patient care, it has become an internationally recognized center of knowledge.

In 2010 Semmelweis University received the title “research university” and has been operating according to its standards since. This title is awarded to higher education institutions which provide a high standard of education and are highly recognized by the international scientific community. The university’s ranking is outstanding among the Hungarian institutions as well as in international rankings based on specialization and overall performance.

According to a ranking made by Times Higher Education (THE), Semmelweis University is among the world’s most international universities. Currently, the university’s faculties maintain bilateral relationships in various areas of cooperation with over 200 higher education institutions from Europe, Asia and America.

Semmelweis University embodies tradition and innovation. The university’s oldest building still in use was built in the 1870s, while the recently opened eight-story, 20 000-squ are-meter Central Patient Care Unit meets all the requirements of the 21st century.
